Whales And Fish Running Record Analysis
This child’s accuracy rate is
1:20, meaning that for each error made, twenty words were correct. With an overall
accuracy rate of 95%, we can determine that this student could read this text
pretty fluently. His self-correction rate was measured at 1:4, indicating that
the child can monitor his own reading properly. I would conclude that this
child is generally an independent and fluent reader at this grade level.
However, I do think that he has a
problem with language and grammatical tenses. He often says ‘most’ for ‘must’
and ‘lived’ for ‘live’, without noticing his error. He also seems to have an
issue focusing, as he loses the place quite often and must be prompted as to
where to continue.
Therefore, I found it quite
interesting and surprising to see that his comprehension was so good. He easily
compared and contrasted whales and fish and gave many accurate details,
although it seemed to me all along that he was reading without giving thought
to what was being read.
Excellent analysis. Please upload the running Record to support the interpretation of your analysis. What would be your instructional focus based on the analysis? :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for the feedback. The running record is attached in my post as a link- is that a problem? My computer was giving me a hard time attaching it any other way...
DeleteAs for the instructional focus, I would try to hone in on some important grammar rules that he seems to be missing:
1- I would teach him the difference between some words that can be easily mixed up- such as 'most' and 'must'.
2- We would also practice and review the concept of past, present, and future tenses.
I find the hardest area to work on would be on his focus, as that requires lots of time and patience. Providing this student with text that interests him and encouraging him to keep reading would build his reading stamina, and hopefully his focusing over time.
